Meet the Artist: Roy Kawaji
Professor Roy Kawaji is a lifelong martial artist and designer who has dedicated over 50 years to the practice, leadership, and promotion of Judo.
Achieving his Kodansha ranking in 2022, his career encompasses work as a national competitor, high-performance coach, certified referee, and kata judge. Kawaji Sensei has played an active role in shaping the sport at every level: serving as a regional officer in Hawaii, national secretary to the USJF President, and a member of the American Judo Alliance team. His contributions also earned him selection as a United States representative to study in Japan under Olympic Champion Yasuhiro Yamashita’s international teaching program.
In 2010, Kawaji Sensei founded Portland Judo, scaling it into the largest Judo club in the United States within five years. The dojo held this milestone until 2021, when he stepped away to care for his ailing father. Following his return home to Oahu, he continued to merge his martial arts lineage with a career as a professional artist and graphic designer. Over the years, his visual work and technical design have shaped identity and apparel across the global Judo community.
The Origin & Evolution of Aloha Judo
Aloha Judo was never originally conceived as an apparel brand. When Kawaji Sensei returned home to Hawaii, he founded Aloha Judo as an initiative to build cultural and athletic bridges between Hawaii and Japan. The organization centers on fostering international exchange through high-level technical seminars, joint training camps, and direct dojo collaborations across the Pacific.
In addition to organizing these events, Kawaji Sensei consistently supported the community behind the scenes, designing custom event shirts, banners, and visual assets for competitions and clinics free of charge. Turning 60 in 2026 marked the right moment to launch a dedicated personal passion project alongside Aloha Judo’s ongoing mission of connection and exchange.
This collection honors over half a century of Judo tradition through the lens of modern design. The Judo Collective is proud to be the exclusive distributor of this limited-edition apparel line, available only in Hawaii.
